424: Tim's Xtracycle

I bought this Specialized Rockhopper a number of years ago, stripped the parts for other bikes, and the frame sat until last year when I donated our second car. The deal was give up the car, buy the Xtracycle kit for grocery shopping and transporting my youngest to and from daycare, sometimes together in one trip.

421: Steve's Xtracycle

The completed Xtracycle. I converted the KHS Summit X into an Xtracycle Cargo Bike using the Free Radical frame and the Freeloader kit.

I also changed the knobby mountain bike tires to Schwalbe Big Apple 26 X 2.0 tires, added the bottle cages, put on my Nitto Albatross bars from my Bridgestone RB-T, changed from Sachs twist grips to Shimano brake/shift lever combo and added cork grips. I swapped the imitation "Brooks gel saddle to an old Selle San Marco Regal perforated leather saddle.

420: Rob's Xtracycle

Hi,

Here's a shot of my late 1980s early 90s Fisher Mt. Tam that has been reborn as an Xtracycle. I plan to use it to commute to work (11 mile round trip, 300 feet of climbing in one hill on the way home) and for errands. I also have twin boys who are the right age for child seats, may do a double seat setup (probably also with Stokemonkey added!!) for my SnapDeck at some point. Love it! Here's to low-carbon transportation!!!!

419: Cara Lin's Instigator Xtracycle

My bike's been overhauled a bit. This summer, I've added new cruiser bars and a layback Thompson's seatpost for a more up-right and relaxed posture and handlebars off my seatpost for a passenger or better loading of bathtubs... Next step is to saw out a new snapdeck from a nice board I picked up from someone else's trash pile.

My frame is the 16" Surly Instigator--and that's as small a frame as will work. The Stokemonkey was a TIGHT fit, literally 2-3 mm clearance.

418: El Duke Degreaser Big Dummy

Photo courtesy of Nick at El Duke, home of the El Duke Degreaser.

A quick product plug...

EL DUKE DEGREASER IS A GENERAL, ALL PURPOSE DEGREASER FOR CLEANING ANY SURFACE. IT WORKS WELL FOR CLEANING BEARING SURFACES, DEGREASING AND REMOVING SOIL FROM CHAINS AND OTHER MOVING PARTS. IT ALSO WORKS AS A PENETRANT AND LUBRICANT. IT IS A SAFER, NON-TOXIC ALTERNATIVE TO OTHER DEGREASERS.

It has a very mild odor and will not irritate the skin.

It is especially useful for cleaning bikes and other parts.

Here's a pic of the Dummy in action

Next generation medieval xtracycle bags

Hey homies,

Been slavin over the old walkin' foot stitching machine, and have these beauts to show for it.

They are basically a takeoff on the stock xtracycle bags, but with heavier duty connection to the frame (2" webbing harness stitched and riveted to leather across the top, and stitched and riveted double straps on the bottom tensioners), custom pockets and deeper side-nets.

Materials from many trips:
  • Used leather from a mondo crafter's store in Durham, North Carolina
  • Old 3/4" 'pee-line' fire hose for trim
  • Firecamp p-cord for the netting drawcords
  • Silver buckles from a belt factory/sweatshop in the sketchy neighborhood on the outskirts of Guadalajara
  • Old fishing net scored from a crusty fisherman named 'Erby that I tracked down in Moss Landing.
Man, they are a lot of work!  I'd like to start selling them on Etsy, but these took the better part of 5 days to make.  Maybe batch production will simplify the process, but a big part of the work is just ripping out and repeating the topstitching when the machine ties loopy knots halfway down a row of stitching...

Anyhoo, I'll entertain custom orders from any of your most hip hipster friends, and will probably post these to zeekobag.etsy.com after I have tested them out a bit.

414: Tiffany's Xtracycle

Hey there, I came across your blog for xtracycle info and photos.

And it said you were looking for photos so I thought I'd submit one.

This is after my son and I took the xtracycle to costco and lowe's.
(I've found that it is easier to get long home improvement stuff (like these pipes) on the xtracycle than it is to get them in my car.

413: Zach's Xtracycle

Early morning inaugural ride on my new Xtracycle!  I think I have one of the prettiest commutes to work, all cotton fields at sunrise.  I need to take another pic when the cotton blooms.

412: Marcus' Xtracycle

Hi --

Just got my Xtracycle built and I LOOOOOOOVE it! It's built around an old Specialized Hard Rock frame, and has a Sturmey-Archer front drum brake, which has proven really useful for long steep hills with groceries or a 7-year-old boy.

Many thanks for the gallery!

Best,
Marcus
